Women's Basketball Gets By Statesmen At Tip-Off Classic

Seyranian and Palmer key 52-47 win

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers turned up the defense to defeat the Delta State Lady Statesmen 52-47 at the Nova Southeastern Tip-off Classic on Saturday in the NSU Arena.

The Bucs held DSU to just 24.6 percent shooting, including 18.1 percent in the second half. Lauren Seyranian and Kiara Palmer led the offensive effort, with Seyranian scoring a game-high 22 points and Palmer adding 16 points and 10 rebounds.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Statesmen opened an early five-point lead, 9-4, only to see Barry storm back a tied it 12-12 after the first period. Lauren Seyranian was a key in the comeback, hitting a pair of three-pointers.
  • 2Q - Barry built a couple of three-point leads, but Alondrea Rush had a four-point play to put Delta back up by five. Barry tied it 24-24 on a layup by Kiara Palmer at the 1:37 mark, but a pair of free throws by Tori Mallory gave DSU the lead at the break.
  • 3Q - The Bucs defense was the story in the third quarter, holding the Statesmen to just 2-of-19 shooting as they took a 34-30 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • 4Q - Seyranian and Palmer carried the offensive load in the fourth quarter, accounting for 16 of the Bucs' 18 points. Leading 40-39 with 5:05 remaining, the Bucs got two three-pointers from Seyranian and a layup from Palmer to build the biggest lead of the game for either team, seven points at 48-41 with 2:49 to go. Delta never got closer than three points the rest of the way. Seyranian and Melanie Jordan hit four-of-four from the line to seal the win.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Seyranian broke the Bucs' single-game record for three-point percentage, hitting 6-of-7 beyond the arc, topping Sanja Zivanovic's 6-of-8 against Nova Southeastern on Dec. 13, 2002.
  • Palmer had the first double-double of the season for the Bucs with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The Bucs' only other meeting with the Statesmen came in the regional final in 2001, won by DSU 86-62.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs open Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 16 against archrival Lynn in the Health & Sports Center.
