No. 12 Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener, 93-77

Five players score in double figures

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University's No. 12-ranked men's basketball team won its season opener in front of a packed house at the Health & Sports Center Saturday, beating crosstown rival Johnson & Wales. The Buccaneers controlled the lead for over 28 minutes in a game that featured five ties and five lead changes.

SUMMARY:

  • Five players scored in double figures for the Buccaneers, who shot 50 percent from the floor.
  • Freshman David Moya scored 20 points in college debut. He was 6 of 8 from long distance.
  • Senior Adrian Gonzalez had 18 points and six rebounds. He was 8 for 10 shooting.
  • Elvar Fridriksson, Sawyer Glick and Daniel Mortensen each scored 10 points.
  • JWU led by four with 9:21 to play in the first half, but Glick hit a triple, and Fridriksson scored after a steal by Marko Tomic to give the Bucs the lead.
  • Tevis Robinson sank a pair of free throws for the Wildcats at the 8:17 mark to tie the game for the last time, but Barry went on a 14-1 run, and Johnson & Wales never recovered.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Bucs won their fourth straight opener under coach Butch Estes.
  • Barry led by six 1:50 into the second half, but the Bucs opened up a 15-point lead on Tomic's basket with 14:39 to play.
  • Moya buried a triple with 9:57 to go to make it a 19-point lead.
  • Arie Williams' layup at the 4:57 mark put the Bucs up, 84-61.
  • Ricardo Suarez and Eric Mendia each scored 15 points for the Wildcats.

Barry hosts Lynn 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the SSC opener.
