Barry Volleyball Blasts Way Past Lynn

Bucs hit season-high .402 in sweep of Fighting Knights

MIAMI SHORES -- Barry's volleyball team hit a season-high .409 on its way to a sweep of Lynn Tuesday, 25-22, 25-14, 28-26.

The Buccaneers (13-9, 5-4 Sunshine State Conference) moved into a tie for third place in the league in the loss column with a big weekend looming ahead. The Bucs will host Eckerd 7 p.m. Friday and Florida Southern 4 p.m. Saturday.

In a back-and-forth first set in which the Buccaneers hit .382, Brittany Reynolds gave Barry a 22-19 lead on a kill from Genesis Castillo. Cleuza Porto's kill pulled the Fighting Knights (15-9, 6-5) within one, but Ivana Didanovic and Castillo followed with kills to move Barry within a point of closing out the set. A bad set kept Lynn alive, but one serve later Barry's Jaeda Allen pounded a kill to put it away.

The Bucs a whopping .647 in the second set, putting down 12 kills with one error. Lynn hit .042 with eight kills and seven errors.

Filimonova put away a setup from Juliana Tirabassi in the second set to get Barry out to an 11-6 lead. Lynn cut it to 12-9 on a kill by Lydia West, but a block by Allen and Filimonova pushed the Bucs back up 17-11. The Fighting Knights made it 20-14 on a kill by West, but Barry ran off the last five points on a kill by Eva Raat, a kill by Allen and three straight aces by Jenny Trinidad.

Trinidad finished with four aces and 23 assists. She is five aces away from reaching the Top 10 in school history.

Didanovic's kill gave Barry an 11-7 lead in the final set. Nicol Colonna's kill pulled the Fighting Knights within 13-10, but Didanovic pounded another kill to extend the Bucs lead to 17-13. Lynn cut it to 18-16 on a kill by West before Filimonova's putaway gave the Bucs a four-point cushion. Lynn tied it up, 20-20, on a Bucs attack error and again at 22-22 on Marissa Tandron's ace. The Fighting Knights pulled ahead 24-23 on a Barry attack error, but Lynn turned around and gave it back on a hitting error of its own on the following serve. Colonna's kill moved the Fighting Knights within set point, but Barry stayed alive one serve later on a Fighting Knights hitting error. West put down a ball to put Lynn up 26-25, but another hitting error squared it up again. Two more Fighting Knights hitting errors handed Barry the win.
