MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The third-seeded Barry Buccaneers (10-2-2) avenged an early season loss to the sixth-seed Florida Tech Panthers with a 1-0 win in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Sunshine State Conference women's soccer tournament at Buccaneer Field on Tuesday night.
Neither team could muster much offense in the first half, though the Panthers held an edge in shots and corners. But with less than four minutes left in the half, Barry's Amanda Traynor carried a ball down to the baseline. She was nearly dispossessed by the Panther defense, but regained the ball and whipped a cross from the right side along the top of the six-yard box. Rayah Seckler was there, unmarked, and slotted a shot into the far post for what proved to be the game's only goal.
The Panthers (11-6-0) held a 16-10 edge in shots including 8-5 on goal and 9-6 in corner kicks. But Barry's Paula Forero was equal to every test, making a season-high eight saves to post her fifth straight and eighth overall shutout on the season. Karlyn Prisco had four saves for the Panthers.
The Bucs advance to face the second-seeded Nova Southeastern Sharks on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 pm.
