LAKELAND, Fla. – Barry's men's soccer team battled to a 3-2 victory over Florida Southern Saturday night in the final regular season match for both teams.
Florida Southern (6-7-1, 2-6-1 SSC) took the early lead in the 13th minute with a goal that was netted from inside the 18 yard box. Luke Bromley sent a down-field pass to find Jonathan Radvogan, who then flicked the ball on to Jacob Ling-Vannerus, who drilled a shot past Barry keeper, Michael Scheraldi.
Barry (10-5-0, 4-5-0 SSC) knotted the match in the 24th minute with a goal from Frank Lustig. Lustig collected the ball from Manuel Perez on the right wing by the post, and one-touched the ball into the net. The goal was Lustig's third goal of the season.
Roughly 30 seconds into the second half, Maurice Padula gave the Bucs the 2-1 lead with his second goal of the season. Padula took advantage of the miscommunication in the Mocs defense, as he collected the ball that was intercepted by Ivan Arenas, and drove a shot into the net from the top of the box.
The Mocs however, evened the match with just less than 25 minutes left in the second half. A corner kick was sent into Barry's 18 yard box by Callum Carsley, where the ball was headed by Edward Spansk of Southern, to find Daniel Moore. Moore then brought the ball down and knocked it into the net to make the score 2-2.
Less than four minutes later, Hanno Antoni scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute. Linus Fischer drove the ball from the back line to find Thomas Coombes, who sent the ball on with Antoni. Antoni then carried the ball to the top of the box, where he lofted a shot up and over Mocs keeper, Cole Clingerman. The goal was Antoni's 13th of the season.
Florida Southern held a 16-11 edge in shots over Barry, but Scheraldi took the win for the Bucs, as he made four saves. Clingerman was dealt the loss for the Mocs, as he only made two saves on the night.
With this victory, the Bucs have secured a spot in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Barry will play on Tuesday Nov. 1st. We will inform you more on the seeding and upcoming tournament schedule as they will be announced shortly.
