Volleyball Drops Pair at South Region Crossover

Barry meets West Alabama Saturday

ORLANDO, Fla. – Barry's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday at the South Region Crossover at Orlando Sports Center.

Barry lost 25-19, 25-19, 25-20, in the first match to Valdosta State. In the second match, the Bucs (8-7) fell to No. 30 North Alabama, 22-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-19, 15-8.

In the first match, the Bucs gave away six serves, had nine setting errors and 22 attack errors. The Blazers (9-10) outblocked the Bucs, 10-5.

Kristina Filimonova had eight kills and a .368 attack percentage for the Buccaneers, who hit .094 for the match. Jaeda Allen had eight kills and eight digs, and Genesis Castillo had six kills. Jenny Trinidad had 20 assists and an ace.

Valdosta State had 61 digs. Barry had 45. Ariel Mangum had 14 for the Bucs.

The Bucs fell behind in a 5-0 hole in the first set, but pulled even at 10-10 on a Blazers attack error. After a kill by Allen, another VSU attack error gave the Bucs a 14-13 lead. But Valdosta State ran off the next four points to go up 17-14. Barry tied it again at 18-18 after a three-point surge started by a kill by Castillo. But the Bucs managed just one point the rest of the way.

Barry had 11 kills and 10 errors in the first set.

The Buccaneers got off to the quick start in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead on Kishara Gordon's kill. Trinidad's ace extended Barry's lead to 7-3. Valdosta State responded with five straight points. The Blazers widened their lead to 17-11 on Natalia Campos' ace. Barry cut the gap to four, but did not get any closer the rest of the set.

The Bucs trailed 12-7 in the third set before Ivana Didanovic put down two straight balls, and Castillo added a kill as Barry pulled within two. Another kill by Didanovic kept the Buccaneers within two, 17-15, but the Blazers won the next two points. VSU extended its lead to 22-16 before the Bucs went on a 3-0 run, capped off on a kill by Allen. But the Blazers held on to win it.

Valdosta State hit .297 in the final set. Barry hit .163.

Against North Alabama, Barry stormed out to a two-set lead, hitting .484 in the second set with 16 kills and one error. The Lions (17-3) hit .022 in the first set.

Allen and Filimonova both had four kills in the second set with a combined no errors. Barry converted 13 of 20 sideouts for 64 percent. North Alabama was 12 of 23.

Allen pounded a kill to give the Bucs a 15-11 lead. Filimonova banged down another to make it 17-12. Eva Raat's kill extended the Buccaneers lead to 21-14. North Alabama ran off three straight points to pull within 23-18, but a kill by Kaitlin Drake and another by Castillo gave the Bucs a two-set lead.

North Alabama swung the momentum in the third set, hitting .342 and converting 15 of 17 sideouts. The Buccaneers hit .132, and were 13 of 24 in sideout chances. Allen's kill kept the Bucs within 14-10, but the Lions used a kill by Lexie Bradley to go ahead, 20-14. UNA won five of the last six points to pull within a set.

Allen had five of Barry's 11 kills in the fourth set, but the Buccaneers had six attack errors, and were 10 of 25 in sideouts, while the Lions hit .281 to even the match at 2-2.

Ana Gabriela Pachecho's kill gave the Lions a 14-10 lead. Didanovic responded with a kill for the Bucs, but North Alabama ran off five straight points to take a 19-11 lead. Barry pulled within 23-19 on Filimonova's kill and an ace by Allen, but Peyton Lang put away the last two balls for the Lions to wrap up the set.

North Alabama jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the decisive fifth set. Barry closed within 12-7 on Filimonova's ace. But the Bucs managed only a kill from Didanovic the rest of the way, and the Lions held on.

The Bucs had four kills and four errors in the final set. The Lions had 11 kills and two errors, and were 7 of 9 in sideouts.

Allen had 12 of 18 her kills after the Bucs took a two-set lead. She hit .425. Filimonova had eight kills and four blocks. Didanovic had seven kills and four blocks. Castillo had six kills and three blocks, and Raat five kills and four blocks. Trinidad had 27 assists, and Juliana Tirabassi had 21. Kat Espinosa had 31 digs, and Drake 13.

Barry outblocked North Alabama, 10-4.

Didanovic became the fifth player in school history to record 300 career blocks.
