TAMPA, Fla. – Barry University men's basketball team won its fourth straight game, beating Tampa, 81-70, on the road Wednesday night. It was the first win at Tampa for coach
Butch Estes, who has now beaten every team in the league on the road.
Yunio Barrueta scored 29 points on 10 of 16 shooting, and
Elvar Fridriksson had 19 points and seven assists for the Buccaneers (10-2, 4-1 Sunshine State Conference).
Barry will host Embry-Riddle at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Buccaneers shot 44.6 percent from the field. The Spartans (4-9, 0-5) hit 40 percent of their shots.
The Bucs overcame a two-point hole, using a 10-0 run during a stretch in which the Spartans missed five straight shots to give Barry an eight-point lead with 6:22 to play. Fridriksson hit a 3-pointer with 9:00 left to give Barry a 61-59 lead. Barrueta buried his fourth triple at the 7:32 mark to give the Bucs a 64-59 lead.
Tray Leonard hit a jumper, and Fridriksson split a pair from the free throw line.
Tampa's Austin Rettig tied the game at 38-38 on a 3-point basket before Barrueta put the Bucs back in front with a triple of his own at the 16:50 mark of the second half. Tampa took the lead 1:08 later when Pat Bacon scored. It was the 13
th lead change of the game.
The Spartans three times bumped their lead to four, but the Buccaneers answered with buckets by Barrueta and
Adrian Gonzalez and a pair of free throws by Barrrueta with 12:00 to go to keep it a one-possession game. Barrueta buried a triple at the 11:25 mark before Rettig answered on the other end for the 15
th lead change.
Gonzalez finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. He was six of 13 from the field.
Barry went 0 for 9 during a stretch in the first half, allowing the Spartans to get out to an 18-11 lead in an inauspicious start for both teams. The Bucs opened the game shooting 5 of 19, while the Spartans were 8 of 19 from the field and 0-for-4 from 3-point range.
Anders Haas ended the drought with a layup after a missed field goal. Barrueta hit a jumper at the 6:44 mark to cut Tampa's lead to 18-16. Tampa later went 0-for-8 as Barry remained within two.
The Bucs used a 7-4 run over a 2:09 span, taking a 25-24 lead on a basket by Barrueta.
Marko Tomic scored with 50 seconds left in the first half as the Buccaneers converted on their final four field goals of the first half to take a 29-28 lead into the break.
Barry shot 36.4 percent from the floor in the first half, and was just 3 of 9 from long distance. Tampa hit 35.5 percent of its field goals, and went 0 of 5 from 3-point range.
The Buccaneers were 14 of 23 from the free throw line. The Spartans sank 12 of 17 from the line. Barry outrebounded Tampa, 42-39. It was the first time in three games the Bucs won the battle on the boards. Leonard had 11 rebounds.
The game featured 18 lead changes and six ties. Tampa led for 20:29. Barry held the lead for 16:11.
