Men's Hoops Takes Down Eagles

Barry outduels Embry-Riddle 120-100

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball authored a 120-100 win over Embry-Riddle Saturday.

The Buccaneers (11-2) scored 120 points for the fifth time in school history. The school record is 128 set twice.

Barry hit 23 of 36 field goals in the second half to break away from a 56-55 halftime lead after Embry-Riddle (10-3) shot 71.9 percent in the first half. The Bucs held the Eagles to 0-for-15 from 3-point range in the second half, while shooting 63.9 percent from the field themselves. Embry-Riddle hit 23 of 32 shots in the first half.

Six Buccaneers scored in double figures as Barry hit 14 of 27 threes.

Yunio Barrueta's dunk with 17:55 left broke the sixth tie of the game to put Barry ahead, 63-61. Adrian Gonzalez scored in transition with 12:18 to go to extend the Bucs lead to nine. Gonzalez hit a jumper with 8:32 on the clock to push the lead to 15, 99-84. Reed Ridder sank a free throw as the Eagles cut it to 10 at the 3:51 mark, but Haas buried a triple to bump the Bucs lead to 113-97, and Barry ran away with it.

Barrueta had 27 points on 10 of 17 shooting and six rebounds. Tray Leonard had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Anders Haas scored 26 points, had seven assists and six rebounds.

The Buccaneers outrebounded the Eagles, 38-28.

Embry-Riddle opened an eight-point lead 3:34 into the game on Ognjen Miljkovic's 3-pointer. Barry cut it to three on an Arie Williams triple, but Dalton Barnes scored in the paint on a fastbreak to bump the Eagles lead back to seven. Barry went on a 6-0 run in a 1:18 span to draw within one on a pair of Haas free throws, but the Eagles pushed the lead back to six on Skyler Hogan's basket.

Miljkovic had 21 points, and Barnes 18. Ridder finished with 22.

Barry used a 8-0 run on a Barrueta triple, Gonzalez lay-in and Haas 3-pointer to take its first lead since the 17:32 mark in the opening half, but Embry-Riddle's Joseph Gonzalez tied it at 36-36 with 7:15 left before the break. Theo Turner's tip-in with 4:43 on the first half clock gave Barry a seven-point lead, but the Eagles tied it at 52-52 on Daniel Kiesling's basket with 1:51 to play in the half. Leonard hit one of two free throws with five seconds left to break the game's fifth tie in the half.

Barry was 16 of 17 from the line. Embry-Riddle hit 20 of 27.

Elvar Fridriksson had 14 points and 13 assists, Gonzalez had 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting, and Williams scored 13 points.

Barry outscored the Eagles, 56-38, in the paint.

The Buccaneers will host Nova Southeastern at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
