BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Barry University women's basketball team used a key defensive play to pull out a nip-and-tuck test at Lynn Saturday, 73-68.
Amra Elezovic came up with a steal and went coast-to-coast to score with 1:13 remaining to give the Buccaneers (13-6, 6-4 Sunshine State Conference) a two-possession lead in a tight game.
Ines Kerin sank three free throws down the stretch, and the Bucs swept the season series against the Fighting Knights (2-16, 0-10).
Lynn led by six with 4:36 to go, following a Maddie Herr 3-pointer. Barry tied the game on triples by
Irene Sanchez and Kerin. After Elezovic sank two free throws to tie the game with 2:35 to play,
Jackie Perez buried a triple 25 seconds later to put the Buccaneers in front for good, 68-65.
It was a game that featured 10 ties and 15 lead changes, where neither team ever built a double-digit lead. Barry led by as many as five three times in the second quarter, overcoming a five-point deficit in the first quarter. Kerin hit a jumper with 2:46 left in the first half to put the Bucs up, 25-20. After Lynn's Zachara Bailey scored on a layup with 1:28 to play to cut the lead to two, Sanchez answered with a triple 25 seconds later to push Barry back in front by five.Â
Shatorria Baker, who finished with 14 points and four assists, tied the game for the sixth time on a 3-pointer with 4:28 to go in the third period. Bria Huffmann scored in transition to give the Fighting Knights a four-point lead. Barry's
Ivana Vuletic hit a turnaround jumper and sank a free throw to complete a three-point play, pulling the Bucs within one, 45-44. Sanchez sank a pair of free throws to tie the game for the seventh time and then give Barry a one-point lead at the 1:10 mark of the third. Elezovic's basket with four seconds left in the third tied the game at 48-48.
Barry was 10 of 20 from 3-point range. Lynn hit 8 of 18 from long distance.Â
Elezovic scored 19 points and had five rebounds and three assists. Sanchez had 15 points, six assists, four boards and two blocks. Kerin had 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting, and Perez scored 10 points. Nina Guillaume had 16 points, and Charla Nelson-James 11 for the Fighting Knights.
Barry will host Saint Leo at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
