Women's Basketball Holds On to Beat Lions

Bucs 28 assists tied for fourth all-time

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University women's basketball team won its third straight game, beating Saint Leo, 79-69, Wednesday.

The Buccaneers (14-6, 7-4 Sunshine State Conference) had 28 assists, which is tied for fourth in school single-game history.

Three players scored in double figures for Barry, who needed to fend off Saint Leo (4-17, 1-11) to pull it out. The Bucs will host Palm Beach Atlantic 3 p.m. Saturday on Make-A-Wish reveal day as part of Homecoming.

Jackie Perez hit her fifth triple of the game four minutes into the third quarter to give Barry a 54-34 lead. Barry led by as many as 25 in the quarter. The Bucs shot 71.4 percent in the third, going 10 of 14 from the floor.

But the Lions cut the Buccaneers lead to 63-55 on a Mary Redmond triple with 7:00 to go. Chelsy Springs scored to cut it six. After Redmond sank two free throws with 3:09 left to keep the Lions within six Barry's Amra Elezovic hit a three and knocked down a jumper in the paint to push the Bucs ahead by 11.

Elezovic was 10 of 14 from the field for 26 points, and had six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Perez scored 21 points, and had six assists. She matched her season high with five 3-pointers. Ines Kerin hit three triples in the first quarter as the Bucs jumped out to an 18-9 lead. She had 11 of her 13 points in the first half.

Springs finished with 24 points on 10 of 19 shooting, and Redmond had 27 points on 9 of 16.

Saint Leo cut the Bucs lead to five midway through the second quarter, but Perez hit two threes and a transition basket after a Kim Flournoy steal to put Barry ahead by 14 inside the 2:00 mark in the first half. The Bucs took a 39-27 lead into the break.

Barry outrebounded Saint Leo 17-8 in the first half. The Bucs hit seven of 11 field goals in the second quarter for 63.6 percent. The Lions were 7 of 12 in the quarter for 58.3 percent.

Neither team had a blocked shot.

The Bucs shot 29 of 54 for 53.7 percent. The Lions hit 27 of 54 field goals for 50 percent.
