MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Despite dropping their only game last week, 52-48 to Florida Tech on the road, the Barry Buccaneers held on to their spot in the Women's DII Media Poll, sponsored by D2SIDA. The Bucs are ranked 10th in the South Region as they get set to host fourth-ranked Florida Southern on Wednesday night in the Health & Sports Center.
The Moccasins (16-2, 7-2 in the Sunshine State Conference), are coming off wins at Rollins (72-66) and at home over Lynn (79-53). Their only losses this season have come on the road at Florida Tech and Nova Southeastern.
A host of seniors, including Amra Elezovic, Jackie Perez and Ines Kerin, lead the Bucs. Elezovic is tops on the squad with 15.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and shoots 91.8 percent from the line. She is third in the league in scoring, eighth in rebounding and leads the league in free throw percentage.
Guards Kerin and Perez chip in 12.2 and 10.6 points per game respectively. They rank first and second in three-point percentage at 47.8 and 43.6 percent. They are tied for the lead in made three-pointers per game at 2.6. Perez also leads the team with 3.5 assists per game, while Kerin adds 2.8.
Fellow senior Irene Sanchez is third on the team in rebounding (5.2) and assists (2.8) while averaging 9.2 points per game. Kim Flournoy, another senior, chips in 4.5 points and 4.9 rebounds to go along with 1.9 steals per game. Flournoy is tied with Kerin for the team lead and they are third in the SSC in steals.
Senior forward Mariah Harris leads the Moccasins with 14.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. One of the top post players in the conference, she shoots 58.1 percent from the floor. Sophomore guard Jensen Blassage, who is second behind Elezovic in free throw shooting at 91.7, chips in 11.6 points and 3.8 assists per game. Though those are the only two Mocs in double figures, they have four players between 8.4 and 9.7 points per game.
Florida Southern leads the league in scoring at 75.8 with their balanced attack. Barry is third in the SSC in scoring at 68.5 points per game. Defensively, Barry is fourth at 60.8 points allowed, while the Mocs are sixth at 64.9. Southern leads the way in scoring margin with a +10.8 edge per game, while Barry is third at +7.6. Florida Southern is 7-1 on the road, including 3-1 in SSC games. Barry is 6-1 at home and 2-1 in conference games.
