Women's Soccer Works Overtime To Defeat The Lions

Grimshaw and Robe combine for the game-winner in overtime

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The 12th-ranked Barry Buccaneers topped the Saint Leo Lions 2-1 in overtime in Sunshine State Conference women's soccer action on Saturday at Buccaneer Field.

Christy Grimshaw and Shanice Robe worked a give-and-go on the right side in the first overtime period for the game winner. Grimshaw slipped a pass to Robe on the wing and got the ball back with a crease to the goal. She ripped a shot to the far post that beat Lion keeper Abby Evans and gave the Bucs (6-2-0, 2-1-0 SSC) as 2-1 win.

The game went to the half scoreless and about a close as possible. Shots were tied at eight, fouls at five. Saves were 5-3 for the Bucs and corners were 4-3 for the Lions.

The Lions (4-4-1, 2-2-0 SSC) grabbed a lead just five minutes into the second half. Arielle Kabangu slipped the defense and found a streaking Genevieve Gignac in the middle of the penalty box. Gignac's shot found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Saint Leo held the lead until the 76th minute, when a defensive miscue dropped the ball at the feet of Shanice Robe. Robe walked in on Evans and buried the equalizer.

Paula Forero had seven saves for the Bucs to pick up the win. Evans had six saves for the Lions, but took the loss.

The Bucs and Lions also played a 2-1 over game last season in St. Leo, Fla. Grimshaw also tallied in that contest, while Rayah Seckler provided the game-winner.

The Bucs travel to Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday, Oct. 3 for a rematch with the Florida Southern Moccasins. The Bucs defeated the Mocs 3-0 in the Flagler Kickoff Classic to open the season.
