MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's baseball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 4 Florida Tech Friday, losing 12-1 and 12-9.
The Buccaneers (15-19, 3-9 Sunshine State Conference) pounded 16 hits in the second game, but couldn't overcome the hot-hitting Panthers (30-5, 12-4) in a 3:43 game. The Bucs surrendered 19 hits in the first game and 18 in the second.
Florida Tech pitcher Scott Ward (8-1) scattered eight hits, allowing a sixth inning home run to left by Barry's
JC Cardenas on an 0-1 count, and walked none to pick up the win in the first game.Â
The Panthers scored twice in the first inning, and tacked on three in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a nine-run lead before Cardenas blasted his second homer of the season. But Tech added three more in the eighth, and the Bucs went quietly.Â
Bucs pitcher
Luis Deville (3-4) took the loss in the opener, going six innings.
Cardenas was 3-for-4 with the solo shot.
Jonathan Quintana went 3-for-4.
Ryan Baldwin,
Kyle Pangallo and
Mike Diaz accounted for the remaining three Buccaneers hits.
In the nightcap, Tech got out to a 4-2 lead before the Bucs answered with two of their own in the bottom of the second. Diaz ripped the first pitch he saw for a two-run double to right-center. The Panthers scored four more runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to six runs, but Barry answered again.
Khalil Denson drove in two runs on a single to left, Cardenas singled up the middle to score Denson, and Quintana's infield single allowed
Frank Gonzalez to score to cut the gap to 8-6.Â
Baldwin hit a sacrifice fly to left to pull the Buccaneers within a run.  But Florida Tech busted out for four more runs in the fifth to take a 12-7 lead. Denson's two-out single up the middle on a 2-1 count scored
Ramon Valdez in the Bucs half of the inning to make it 12-8. Bucs reliever
Andy Rohloff shut down the Panthers in order in the sixth, and Quintana homered to left on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the sixth as Barry pulled within three.
Rohloff, who worked the final 4 2/3 innings, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, and prevented the Panthers from scoring with two runners on to end the eighth before retiring Tech in order in the ninth. He held the Panthers' scoreless over the final four innings. But Barry stranded three runners in the eighth after Cardenas doubled to open the inning off reliever Andrew Beyer, and Tech swept the twin bill.
Denson was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a walk. Cardenas had two hits in five trips. Quintana went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Baldwin collected two hits in four at-bats. Valdez was 2-for-4 with a walk. Pangallo and Diaz each had two hits in five plate appearances as every Bucs starter had at least one hit.
Greg Brodzinski had a hit in his only at-bat before being replaced by L.K. Tompson to play first base.
Barry's 16 hits matched a season-high, and were the most for the Bucs since pounding 21 runs on 16 hits against Merrimack on March 9.
Quintana took the loss. Tim Whalen (5-0) got the win for the Panthers, and Jerrod Leinhauser picked up his eighth save.Â
Barry will host St. Thomas at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
