Softball Drops Series Opener To Eckerd

Bucs still two wins away from conference title

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--The Barry Buccaneers stayed stuck on a magic number of two for the Sunshine State Conference softball title, following a 6-3 loss to the Eckerd Tritons on Friday night at Buccaneer Field.

The Tritons scored four runs in the fifth inning off Barry starter Haley Wiseman (17-7) who entered the frame without allowing a hit. In the fifth, Chelsea Armstrong drew a one out walk and Brittany Mitchell broke up the no-hitter with a hit-and-run single up the middle. Wiseman walked Kiley King to load the bases and Kirby Parnell rapped a single to center to score Armstrong. Sydney Dinelli rocketed a single to the left-center gap to score two more runs and the Tritons got another when Parnell scored on the front end of a double steal.

Armstrong added a two run homer in the sixth.

The Bucs (31-14, 15-7 SSC) finally got on the board in the sixth. Alayna Gallagher reached on an error and Dee Espinosa doubled over the head of Parnell in center. Espinosa scored when Brittany Martinez, who had made the error on Gallagher, bounced her relay throw off Espionsa's helmet, allowing her to score from second.

Julie Brito cut the lead to 6-3 in the seventh with an RBI single to score Hunter Mars.

Wiseman took the loss for the Bucs, allowing six runs, all earned, on five hits and three walks in 5.2 innings. Amber Hay (21-13) earned the win for the Tritons, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk and struck out six.

The series, and the regular season, concludes on Saturday at noon with a doubleheader.
