Bucs Win Over Eckerd in SSC Game

A great pitching performance leads Bucs to victory

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Barry University's baseball team looked to this weekend's series as a chance to get back in the win column, and did so Friday night in defeating the Eckerd Tritons,12-3.

The Bucs opened the game with a Greg Brodzinski sacrifice fly that brought JC Cardenas home to make it 1-0. Cardenas made it easier for himself by stealing second and third base in the inning.

The Tritons tied it up in the bottom of the second inning when CF Chris Cashman singled through third base to bring LF Lorenzo Vazquez in from second.

The Bucs grabbed the lead back in the fifth with four runs off a Ramon Valdez double to right-center that brought in Ross Thibeault, a Brodzinski double to left field that brought around Valdez, before Jonathan Quintana singled up to middle to score Ryan Baldwin and make it a 6-1 ball game.

The Bucs scored five more runs in the seventh behind RBIs by Brodzinski, Kyle Pangallo and Mike Diaz. Eckerd answered back in the bottom half of the inning, adding two runs off a home run by Lorenzo Vazquez and a James Petika RBI single. The Bucs tacked on a run for good measure in the top of the ninth after an error brought Quintana home to make it 12-3.

Barry starter Nate Greve would went the distance to give the Bucs their first win in five games. Greve earned his second win of the season after pitching the first complete game of his career and striking out five. Eckerd starter Jack Silberman took his third loss after lasting 6.1 innings and giving up five earned runs and 10 hits, while striking out four.

The Bucs improved to 16-20 overall and 4-9 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Tritons fell to 15-20, 3-11. The series continues Saturday as the teams face off in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
