Men's Tennis Snaps NAIA Champs 27-Match Win Streak

Bucs put in overtime to beat Grizzlies

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers took two of three doubles and four of six singles to knock off the defending NAIA national champions, the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies, at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Sunday, halting the Grizzlies 27-match winning streak.

The Bucs (8-0) took the top two doubles points. Ahmed Triki and Fabian Groetsch out-battled Lachlan McPhee and Luke Morland 8-5 at the top flight. Kevin Seilmann and Renato Lombardi continued to play well at number two, defeating the Grizzlies All-American tandem of Jordan Cox and Connor Clements 8-6. Georgia Gwinett took the bottom flight 8-5, as Kevin Konfederak and Stefano Licata got the better of Dominik Haider and Franco Echenique.

In singles, the Bucs handed a number of the Grizzlies their first losses of the season, though five of the six flights went to three sets. Fourth-ranked Triki knocked off second-ranked Cox 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 at number one. At number three, #48 Seilmann handed seventh-ranked Matais Hatem his first career loss 7-5, 0-6, 6-3. Fabian Pronnet handed #43 Clements his first loss of the season 6-1, 0-6, 11-9 at number five.

Haider clinched the match for the Bucs 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at number six over Licata.

For the Grizzlies (5-1), Konfederak bested third-ranked Groetsch 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) at number two. McPhee, ranked 17 in NAIA, nipped #26 Nico Dreer 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-8 at number four, after the team match was decided.

The Bucs face Northwood (Mich.) on Thursday, Mar. 12 at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
