TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split their Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader to the Tampa Spartans at Naimoli Family Stadium on Sunday, winning game one 6-2, but falling 2-1 in the second game.
The Buccaneers (23-7, 7-2 SSC) took the first game 6-2. Tampa scored single runs in the second and fifth innings to lead 2-0, but Barry came back to score three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings for the win.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Megan Copeland walked with one out and Alayna Gallagher followed with a bunt single. After a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, Dee Espinosa delivered a single up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. Kelly Martinez drove in Espinosa for a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh, Lexi Corrente led off with a double to left, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kristina Pazienza. One out later, Copeland reached onn a bunt single and Gallagher hit a high chopper to third that she was able to beat out. Espinosa drove in Copeland with a single and, after Julie Brito was hit by a pitch, Martinez drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Taylor Sabol (8-3) scattered seven hits and a walk for the win. She allowed two runs in the complete game and struck out four. Julia Morrow (14-5) took the loss for Tampa, Allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out 10.
In the second game, the Bucs led 1-0 going to the bottom of the seventh, but the Spartans (18-8, 6-6 SSC) rallied for two runs to win 2-1.
