Softball's Win Streak Snapped By Tampa

Bucs fall 4-2 in opener

TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers saw their 12-game winning streak snapped with a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Spartans in the first game of their Sunshine State Conference softball series at Naimoli Family Stadium on Saturday night.

Megan Burke hit a two-out, two-run homer down the left field line that barely snuck inside the foul pole. That snapped a 2-2 tie and provided the winning margin for the Spartans (17-8, 5-5 SSC).

The Buccaneers (22-6, 6-1 SSC) struck first in the opening frame. Alayna Gallagher singled with one out, moved up to second on a wild pitch by Tampa starter Julia Morrow (14-4) and scored on a single by Julie Brito.

The Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Kandi Kuder led off with a double and scored two outs later on a single by Lindsay Dring.

In the fifth inning, Dee Espinosa and Brito hit back-to-back doubles to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Jenna Halper tripled to lead off the inning and scored, to tie the game at 2-2, on a one-out single by Kuder. One out later, Burke lined a shot down the left field line for the winning runs.

Morrow earned the win, allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk and struck out four. Haley Wiseman (10-3) took the loss for the Bucs, giving up four runs on a eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The series concludes on Sunday at noon with a doubleheader.
