CLEARWATER, Fla.—The Barry University Buccaneers split a pair of games at the Eckerd Triton Spring Invitational on Saturday, falling 8-2 to Southwest Baptist but rebounding to defeat Harding 9-3.
The Bucs (2-2) got the scoring going early against the Harding Bison (2-4). Megan Copeland drew a lead-off walk and stole second. She came in on an RBI single by Kelly Martinez.
Barry added a pair of runs in the second. Hunter Mars knocked in Ashley Fernandez, who had singled to lead off the frame. Mars came around on a double by Dee Espinosa.
Poor Bison fielding led to two more runs in the third. Martinez led off with a walk. On a strikeout that eluded the catcher, she advanced all the way to third and scored when the first baseman's throw was wild at third. Fernandez, who went 3-for-4 in the game, scored on a error by the Bison shortstop.
Barry put up three more runs in the fifth inning, with a little more help from the Bison defense. After another single by Fernandez, Kristina Pazienza grounded to third base, but Amanda Berdon's throw to second, pulled Emily Jones off the bag. Fernandez scored on a single by Copeland and Alayna Gallagher drove in Pazienza and Copeland with a single up the middle.
The Bucs nearly closed out the game on the run rule in the fifth. The Bison loaded the bases with two outs and Brooklyn Moon lifted a shallow fly ball down the left field line. Barry's Kristina Osorio made a diving attempt at the line, but couldn't come up with the ball and Jones and Kimmie Hendricks scored.
Barry got one back in the seventh when Copeland scored on an error, but gave it back in the bottom of the inning when Hendricks tripled and scored on a ground out.
Haley Wiseman (1-1) earned the marathon win, tossing 142 pitches in the complete game. She allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks and struck out eight. Taylor Friend (0-1) took the loss for Harding. She gave up three runs on four hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.
In the opening game, the Bearcats (1-2) slammed three home runs and led 6-2 after the third inning, then held on for a 8-2 final.
Lexi Corrente went 3-for-3 and scored one run, while Copeland scored the other for the Bucs.
Kyra Parker (1-1) worked the full seven innings to get the win for the Bearcats. She allowed just two runs (one earned) on eight hits and struck out two. Taylor Sabol (1-1) took the loss for Barry, allowing six runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings. She walked two and struck out two. Pazienza, making her first appearance in the circle as a Buccaneer, worked the final 4.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks.
The Bucs close the tournament on Sunday, facing the Cougars of Colorado Christian at 11:30 am.
