CLEARWATER, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the 2015 softball season with a 4-2 win over Chadron State in the Eckerd Triton Spring Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex on Friday.
The Bucs (1-1) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after loading the bases with two outs. Kelly Martinez came up with the hit to drive in Megan Copeland with the first run of the season.
After leaving the bases loaded in the second without a run, the Bucs struck again in the third. Martinez drew a one-out walk and Kristina Pazienza had an infield single. Both move up on a wild pitch by Eagle starter Breeze Phillips. Kristina Osorio came up with the big hit, lacing a single up the middle to score both runners.
After the Eagles (0-2) closed to 3-2 on single runs in the fifth and sixth, Barry tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Ogle walked, stole second and scored on a double to left by Copeland.
Taylor Sabol (1-0) worked six innings for the win. She allowed two runs on four hits and a walk and struck out nine. Haley Wiseman worked the seventh to pick up her first save.
In the second game of the evening, the Bucs fell to Shorter (2-0) 6-2. The Hawks got a three-run homer from Kameron Carter in the first inning and pitcher Amanda Blanchard made it stand up.
Copeland led off the sixth inning for the Bucs and Alyana Gallagher followed with a single to center. Hawks centerfielder Niki Cook over ran the ball allowing Copeland to head for third and Gallagher alertly took second on the throw. Dee Espinosa plated Copeland with a groundout and Gallegher came in on an RBI single by Julie Brito.
Wiseman (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks in a complete-game effort. Blanchard (1-0) also went the distance, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out six.
The Bucs face Southwest Baptist and Harding on Saturday's day two of the tournament.\
