ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers swept a doubleheader 9-5 and 9-7 from the host Flagler Saints at the South/Southeast Region Crossover Tournament at Flagler Field on Saturday.
The Bucs broke out the bats for 18 runs and 22 hits in the twinbill, led by Dee Espinosa who went 4-for-7 seven with three doubles and five RBI. Haley Wiseman (4-1) and Kristina Pazienza (1-0) picked up the wins for the Bucs (6-3) in the circle.
The Bucs fell behind in the first game, 1-0, in the third inning, but bounced back for two runs in the fourth and fifth and another four in the sixth. Ashley Fernandez drove in Espinosa, who had doubled, to tie the game. Fernandez came around on a single by Cheyanne Head.
In the fifth, Kelly Martinez drove in Megan Copeland with a double and Martinez scored on a single by Julie Brito.
The Saints (4-7) helped out the Bucs in the sixth inning with a pair of costly errors. Fernandez reached on an error by third baseman Tori Volz. Head laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Volz tried to get Fernandez at second in vain. Hunter Mars laid down another bunt to move the runners, but second baseman could not handle the throw from catcher Hollianne Dohrn and Fernandez, who finished with three runs, scored from second. Copeland dropped down a bunt single to score Head and Martinez walked to load the bases. Copeland and Mars worked a double steal and Copeland came home on a fly ball from Espinosa.
Barry added an insurance run in the seventh as Fernandez scored on a single by Mars.
Down 9-1, the Saints ran up four runs in the seventh, capped by a two-run triple by Dohrn.
Wiseman went the distance for the Bucs, giving up five runs (one earned) on eight hits and six walks. She struck out two. Tinsley Smith (1-2) took the loss for Flagler. She surrendered four runs (three earned) ono six hits and two walks in 4.1 innings.
The Saints led 2-0 in game two after three innings and 6-4 after six before the Bucs rallied for the win. The Bucs pushed across four runs in the fourth. Alayna Gallagher led off with a single to right and Martinez followed with a double down the right field line. Espinosa laced a double into the gap in right center to plate both of them. After a single by Brito put runners at the corner, Fernandez drove in Espinosa with a fly ball and Pazienza smoked a single through the right side to score Brito.
The Saints tied the game in the fifth on three doubles by Maddie Murphy, Mackenzie Conley and Lauren Roudabush and took the lead in the sixth as Kayla Fuller ripped a two-run double.
Espinosa came through in the seventh with a two-run double of her own to tie the game at 6-6.
In the eighth, on the international tiebreaker, Fernandez pushed a bunt single through the Saints' shift to leave runners at the corner. Pazienza singled again through the right side to score Brito with the tie-break run. Kristina knocked in Fernandez and, with the bases loaded, Pazienza came home on a fielder's choice by Gallagher. The Saints chipped away one run in the bottom of the inning, but the Bucs held on.
Pazienza worked 3.1 innings in relief of Taylor Sabol to earn her first win as a Buccaneer. She allow three runs (one earned and one on the tie-breaker) on three hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter. Katelyn Smith (2-3) took the loss for Flagler. She allowed nine runs (eight earned and one on the tie-breaker) on 12 hits and a walk.
The Bucs take on Georgia Southwestern, who faced Florida Southern on Saturday, in the final series on Sunday. Games start at noon.
