MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers step out to face the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday in Rubin Arena. The game time was moved up to 12:00 noon to accommodate the NCAA Division II Volleyball Regional Tournament being hosted by the Sailfish as well this weekend.
Though the Bucs (5-2) have faced Palm Beach Atlantic in home-and-home series since 2010, the games take on added significance this season as they come scheduled through the conference slate, though they will not count on the SSC record for either team. The teams split the series last season, with the Sailfish snapping an eight-game win streak for the Bucs in the second game. Both teams won at home. Overall, it's been fairly lopsided, with the Bucs holding a 20-3 edge.
The Bucs' senior-laden roster features three players among the tops in the conference. Forward Amra Elezovic leads the team with 17.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists. She is third in the league in scoring, fifth in rebounding and fifth in assists. Hitting 90.9 percent from the line, she is also second in free throw shooting. Guards Jackie Perez and ines Kerin chip in 11.9 and 10.1 points per game respectively and are among the top long-range shooters in the league. Perez leads the circuit hitting 51.2 percent from beyond the stripe, while Kerin is second at 47.2 percent. Perez's 3.1 triples per game is the most in the league, and Kerin is third at 2.4 per game. The duo also average 4.7 assists and 3.1 steals per game combined.
Despite their 5-2 record, the Bucs lead the SSC in scoring margin (+13.6), ranking third in both offense and defense in the league. Barry is second in three-point field goal shooting at 39.5 percent and tops in made three-pointers at 9.1 per game. The Bucs have taken good care of the ball this season, ranking second in both turnover margin (+3.57) and assist/turnover ratio (1.00).
The Sailfish (1-6) have been powered this season by the backcourt duo of senior Nini Krstic and sophomore Hannah Grim. Krstic pumps in a team-best 14.6 points per game, while Grim adds 12.9. Krstic is also one of the top 'Fish on the glass at 7.0 rebound per game, while Grim averages better than two steals per contest.
Barry is currently riding a four-game win streak, including an impressive 76-63 win over Lynn on Wednesday. The 'Fish have just one win on the season, but it's an impressive one as well, a 60-53 victory over Washburn, one day after the Ichabods handed pre-season SSC favorite Nova Southeastern their only loss.
