FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers eked out a 72-68 women's basketball win over the Miles Lady Golden Bears in the 2015 NSU Shark Holiday Classic on Sunday to close out the first semester.
The Buccaneers (8-3) earned their third straight win to close the first term, gutting out a tough win over a game Miles squad.
Trailing by two points with 2:50 left to play, the Bucs held the Bears (6-4) scoreless the rest of the way and dropped in six points to pick up the win. Irene Sanchez knotted the game at 68-68 with a jumper with 2:33 left. Ines Kerin gave the Bucs the lead with a short jumper at 1:43 and Amra Elezovic iced the game with a pair of free throws with just 0:05 seconds on the clock.
Barry jumped out to a 22-16 lead after the first quarter, but the Bears held the Bucs to just six points in the second period to go into halftime up 33-28.
Barry timed the lead to three, 51-48 at the end of the third, but did not regain the lead until Sanchez hit a pair of free throws with 4:40 to play. Kerin led the Bucs with 19 points and five assists, while Jackie Perez and Elezovic each had 17 points. Sanchez added 14, seven rounds and three blocks. Kim Flournoy led the Bucs, who held a 34-28 edge on the boards, with nine rebounds. Larian Scott led the Bears with 28 points and Tierra Willams came off the bench with 14.
The Bucs are off until Jan. 2 when they host the Rollins Tars in Sunshine State Conference action in the Health & Sports Center.
