Women's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half To Knock Off Lions

Perez scored 14, all in the fourth quarter, to lead the Bucs

ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers used a big third quarter to build a lead and a huge fourth quarter from Jackie Perez to hold on to it as they defeated the Saint Leo Lions 64-49 in the Bowman Activities Center in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

The Bucs (6-3, 2-1 SSC) held a narrow three-point lead, 23-20, at the half, but out-scored the Lions (3-5, 1-4 SSC) 20-11 in the third period. Ines Kerin had nine points in the period, nearly matching the Lions' 11 points.

In the fourth period, both team had their best offense and again a Buccaneer came close to matching the output of the whole Lions' team. Jackie Perez, who was held scoreless in the first three periods, went 5-for-7 from the floor, including four three-pointers to finish with 14 points. The Lions had 18 as a group.

Barry out-scored the Lions in each period to build the final 15-point margin. The Bucs scored 21 points off of 24 Lion turnovers. Barry had 14 steals, paced by Kim Flournoy's seven swipes.

Perez led the Bucs with 14 points, while Kerin added 13 and Irene Sanchez added 12. Perez and Kerin combined for eight assists and five steals against only two turnovers.

Chachi Guzman and Izaball Skoogh each had 14 points to lead the Lions. Chelsea Springs had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Bucs are off for another week until they close the semester at the NSU Holiday Classic facing Albany State and Miles.
