MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team gave the fifth-ranked team in the country trouble, but Tampa pulled away in the Buccaneers' final home match of the season Saturday, winning 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.
Barry (12-10, 7-6 Sunshine State Conference) will finish the final two weeks of the regular season on the road, beginning Friday at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach.
The Bucs hit .113, while the Spartans (23-5, 11-1) had a .225 attack percentage on a day four Barry seniors played their final match in the Health & Sports Center. Setter
Jasmine Serna had 13 assists to reach 1,300 in her four-year career.
Brittany Jaco had 13 digs and an ace.
Katie Dooley had a team-high eight kills to go over 300 in her four-year career.
Laine Cielena had four kills and a solo block.
Cielena banged down a kill in the first set to bring Barry within 10-8, but Tampa's Elise Boutet served up an ace to bump the Spartans lead to 14-9.
Ivana Didanovic's kill kept the Bucs within four, 21-17, but Berkley Whaley had two straight kills to push Tampa to a six-point lead, and Barry couldn't overcome the deficit.
Barry took a 14-10 lead in the second set on one of Didanovic's eight kills, but the Spartans went on a 6-1 run to take a 17-16 lead on one of Whaley's 10 kills. The Bucs couldn't get over the hump, despite Dooley and
Jenny Trinidad's block on Whaley that pulled Barry within 22-21. Tampa's three straight kills down the stretch gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
Serna's kill in the third set lifted the Bucs to a 12-7 lead. Tampa went on a 7-1 run to take a 14-13 lead before Dooley slammed down a kill, and Cielena added another to put the Bucs in front, 15-14. But Marissa Lisenbee's kill completed another Spartans surge -- this time a 7-0 run -- to give Tampa a 21-15 lead Barry couldn't overcome.
Lisenbee had 10 kills, and hit .320. Gina Clarke had 23 assists, and Jessica Wagner six kills and four blocks for the Spartans, who had five aces.Â

Kaitlin Drake had six kills. Didanovic hit .412, and had five blocks, Dooley had three blocks, and Serna added five kills, a block and five digs. Trinidad had 14 assists and an ace.Â
The Bucs were 33 of 73 in sideout chances. The Spartans were 35 of 62. The Buccaneers outblocked Tampa, 9-7.Â
