Volleyball Sets Season-Highs in Win at Embry-Riddle

Buccaneers play at Rollins Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team beat Embry-Riddle for the second time this season, winning the road match Friday night at the ICI Center, 23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-15.

The Buccaneers (13-10) will take their show to Winter Park Saturday for a big conference date with Rollins. Saturday's match can be seen HERE.

Barry hit a season-high .343, pounding 70 kills in the win over the Eagles, who fell to 12-15. Embry-Riddle, who will become a Sunshine State Conference member in two years, hit .188.

"One of our best statistical matches," Bucs coach Steve Hendricks said. "Katie (McCrath) and I are very happy with how we executed our game plan."

Barry senior setter Jasmine Serna had a career-high 63 assists, which ranks ninth all-time in four-set matches in school history.

After dropping the first set, the Bucs broke away in the second set when Kaitlin Drake pounded a kill for a 20-18 lead. The Eagles tied it back up before Ivana Didanovic and Kat Espinosa each had kills to put the Bucs ahead by two again. But the Eagles committed two attack errors down the stretch to square the match at a set apiece entering intermission.

Barry was on fire in the third set, blistering 19 kills against one error for a hitting percentage. The Buccaneers topped that in the final set when they hit a season-best .704 with no errors to put Embry-Riddle away in four. The Bucs broke free from a 10-10 tie in the third set on two Eagles errors and a kill by Didanovic to take a three-point lead. Espinosa's kill moved Barry in front, 17-14, and the Bucs finished with a flurry down the stretch as Katie Dooley, Didanovic and Drake combined for seven straight kills to make it 2-1. In the final set, Barry raced to a 12-4 lead on a putaway by Dooley. Paola Buitrago's ace put the Eagles away.

Drake had a season-high 23 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Didanovic had 18 kills and six blocks, hitting .471. Dooley hit .379, and had 12 kills and four blocks. Brittany Jaco had 33 digs to go over the 500 mark for the season. She tied her school-record for digs in a four-set match. Espinosa had seven kills and 14 digs. Serna and Ariel Mangum each had 15 digs.

"The team fought for each point tonight and played well," Hendricks said.

Barry outblocked Embry-Riddle, 10-6.
