Men's Basketball Outlasts Shaw on Road

Bucs use late run to put away from Bears

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Barry University used a late second half push to put away Shaw University on the road Monday night, 80-72. 

The Buccaneers (5-1) led by as many as 15 in the first half, but Shaw (1-5) forced a couple turnovers to take a four-point lead with 7:26 to play in the game. Barry used a 10-0 run to regain control with 4:52 to play, and the Bucs held on down the stretch.

Adrian Gonzalez scored 18 points, getting a tip-in with 6:53 to go to cut the Bears lead to 64-63. He then hit a triple at the 5:32 mark to push the Bucs in front, 68-64. Shaw cut it to three on David Madol's layup with 1:31 remaining, but Undra Mitchem canned a 3 to extend the Bucs lead back to six on the next trip down the floor.

Barry was outscored, 50-24, in the paint. 

Anders Haas had 14 points and five rebounds, and Yunio Barrueta scored 14 points and grabbed 13 boards for the Buccaneers, who shot 33 percent from the field. Tray Leonard, making a return to his hometown, had 14 rebounds, three blocks and seven points. Undra Mitchem scored 13 points, pulled down five rebounds and had three steals. Joell Hopkins Jr. scored 20 points and grabbed 11 boards, and Larry Richardson had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Bears, who hit 36.7 percent of their shots.

Gonzalez recorded his first double-double, grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with his 18 points. 

The Bucs built a 24-9 lead on a tip-in by Leonard with 6:42 left in the first half. Shaw cut it to eight 1:26 later, but Elvar Fridriksson scored at the 3:41 mark to bump Barry's lead back to 12. The Bears used an 8-1 run to draw within five before the half.

Barry was 28 of 37 from the free throw line. The Bucs outrebounded the Bears, 56-48.

The Bucs will host Lynn in a Sunshine State Conference game 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. It is the final home game of the semester for Barry.
