Volleyball Sweeps Lynn

Bucs host No. 5 Tampa 4 p.m. Saturday in home finale

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team picked up its first sweep since Oct. 16, beating rival Lynn, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18, Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers (12-9, 7-5 Sunshine State Conference) will host No. 5 Tampa at 4 p.m. Saturday in the final home match of the season. 

Barry trailed 17-10 in the first set, but recovered to win 15 of the final 21 points to take a 1-0 lead. The Bucs hit .104 in the opening set, putting away 14 balls while committing nine attack errors. The Buccaneers overcame eight ties and three lead changes in the first set to pull it out.

Still, the momentum continued to swing the Bucs way as the match wore on. Barry hit .219 in the second set, needing just 11 kills against four errors to send the Fighting Knights into intermission down 2-0. Lynn (13-11, 4-8) hit .116 in the second set.

Bucs setter Jenny Trinidad banged down four of her eight kills in the third set, and Barry hit .275 as a team while converting 77 percent of its sideout chances to win going away. The Fighting Knights had nine kills and seven errors for an .050 attack percentage in the final set. Barry's Kaitlin Drake had half of her 10 kills in the third set, which featured only one lead change. 

Trinidad hit .462, and had 16 assists and six digs. Katie Dooley had eight kills and two blocks, and Ivana Didanovic added seven kills and three blocks. Brittany Jaco had 19 digs, and Kat Espinosa 16 digs and one of the Bucs' four service aces. Jasmine Serna had 18 assists and 10 digs.

Lynn's Cleuza Porto had 10 kills, and Marissa Tandron had 22 assists and two aces.

The Buccaneers outblocked the Fighting Knights, 5-2.
