Women's Basketball Smothers Lions

Bucs hold FMU to 19 percent shooting

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 92-51 win over the Florida Memorial Lions in women's basketball action from the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday night.

The Bucs (3-2) jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first four minutes and never looked back. They led 28-8 at the end of the first period and 54-27 at the half.

Barry held the Lions (2-5) to just three points in the third period as they went 0-17 from the field, extending the lead to 73-30. With 1:53 left in the game, Barry pushed the lead to 47, 91-44 on a three-pointer by Kat Espinosa, for their biggest lead of the game.

Jackie Perez led five Bucs in double figures with 17 points and five assists. Ines Kerin chipped in 15 points. Toni Neibler came off the bench for 11 points, while Irene Sanchez and Amra Elezovic each had 10 points. Elezovic led Barry with eight rebounds and tied Perez with five assists. Barry hit 51.6 percent from the floor, including 48.3 percent from three-point range.

The Lions were held to just 19.2 percent shooting, 21.4 percent from long-range. Nicole Collins came off the bench for nine points to lead the Lions as they failed to have a double-figure scorer.

The Bucs host Johnson & Wales on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2:00 pm.
