Men's Basketball Gets By PR-Mayaguez

Barrueta ties school record

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Yunio Barrueta made history again, and Barry University's men's basketball team held off Puerto Rico-Mayaguez for a 96-80 win Friday night.

Barrueta scored 28 points and had 13 rebounds for his school record-tying 28th career double-double. He matched that of Willie Whitfield for the most in school history. 

The No. 7/24 Buccaneers (2-1) will host Johnson & Wales 7 p.m. Tuesday in the second of three straight home games.

Barry shot 52 percent from the field, canning 11 of 28 triples, while dishing out a season-high 28 assists. Mayaguez, playing its first game of the season, shot 44 percent from the floor and were 10 of 24 from long range.

The Bucs led by as many as 29 in the second half, but the Tarzans went on a 14-0 run over a 3:58 span to cut the lead to 65-50. But Barry used a 13-5 run of its own, touched off by Anders Haas' layin at the 6:57 mark to extend the lead back to 23. Mayaguez could not recover. 

Barry outscored Mayaguez, 41-30, in the paint. The Bucs outscored the Tarzans 16-4 in points off turnovers in the first half, but Mayaguez flipped the switch in the second half, outscoring Barry, 22-14, in the same category. Barry's bench outproduced Mayaguez, 18-3, in the opening half. But the Tarzans turned the tables in the second half, winning the bench scoring, 18-8.

The Tarzans led by three 5:51 into the first half, but the Buccaneers tied the game on Undra Mitchem's triple at the 13:46 mark and never trailed the rest of the way.

Jaime Perez had 23 points and three steals for the Tarzans. Alexander Curet added 16 points and five boards. 

Mitchem had 12 points and four assists. Tray Leonard had 10 points and four rebounds. Anders Haas had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists as four Barry starters reached double figures. Elvar Fridriksson was a point away from putting the entire Bucs starting five into double figures. He finished with nine assists. David Sachs had nine points and three assists in 11 minutes. Marko Tomic had nine points.
