MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- On a night when all five starters scored in double figures, Barry University men's basketball team beat Johnson & Wales, 87-72, in a battle of cross-town rivals.
The No. 15-ranked Buccaneers (3-1) hit 16 field goals in each half, shooting 50 percent from the floor. Johnson & Wales (3-3) hit 41 percent of its shots, but was outrebounded, 51-27.
Undra Mitchem went eight of 13 from the floor, including five of eight from downtown, to finish with 21 points.
Tray Leonard had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and
Yunio Barrueta had 15 points and 13 boards for his school-record 29th career double-double.
Barry used a 7-0 run in the first half, capped off by a dunk by Barrueta to take a 24-16 lead at the 10:06 mark. Mitchem hit a jumper in the paint to extend the Bucs lead to 15 5:35 before halftime, but Antwan Hill scored at the 2:07 mark to bring the Wildcats within nine. Theo Turner put back an offensive board to send the Buccaneers into the break ahead by nine.
The Bucs outscored the Wildcats, 14-4, in second chance points in the first half.
Elvar Fridriksson converted a three-point play at the 12:34 mark of the second half to give Barry a 63-46 lead. Leonard had two second half dunks, the second on a follow-up to extend the Bucs lead to 22. Leonard canned a three at the five-minute mark to make it a 23-point game, 81-58. But JWU went on a 14-2 run to pull within 11 on a triple by Smith with 2:35 to go. But the Wildcats couldn't get any closer.
Barry outscored Johnson & Wales, 15-2, in second chance points in the second half. The Wildcats converted eight Bucs turnovers into 11 second half points. Barry scored just two points off turnovers in the second half.Â
The Bucs were 13 of 22 from the free throw line for 59 percent. The Wildcats shot 10 of 14 for 71 percent.
Fridriksson had 14 points and six rebounds, and
Anders Haas had 11 points. Turner had seven points, eight rebounds and one of the Bucs four blocks.
Barry will host Florida National at 4 p.m. Friday.
