SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team lost a tough match on the road Saturday to Sunshine State Conference foe Saint Leo. The Buccaneers fell, 22-25, 25-19, 17-25, 29-27, 15-9.
Barry dropped to 11-9 overall, 6-5 in the SSC. Saint Leo improved to 16-8, 7-4.Â
The Bucs will host Lynn at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Health & Sports Center.
Trailing 22-21 in the first set, Barry used a kill by
Ivana Didanovic and three straight putaways by
Kaitlin Drake to take a 1-0 lead. After the Lions tied the match at 1-1 by winning the second set, the Buccaneers took control back after intermission when
Kat Espinosa ripped off an ace for a 20-15 lead.
Jenny Trinidad's ace bumped Barry's lead to 23-17, and a pair of Saint Leo attack errors gave the Bucaneers a 2-1 lead.
Barry overcame a 14-9 deficit in the fourth set, taking a 17-16 lead on
Brittany Jaco's ace. Didanovic's kill tied the score at 19-19.
Ariel Mangum served the Bucs in front on the next point, but the Lions responded with a 3-0 run to go up, 22-20.
Katie Dooley's kill knotted it up at 24-24. Hope Lemon put the Lions ahead, 26-25, but Dooley answered again with a kill. Jaco added another ace to give the Bucs a match point opportunity, but a kill by Saint Leo's Anna Siruckova and two Buccaneers attack errors tied the match at 2-2.
Saint Leo never let Barry gain control in the final set, holding off the Bucs after Drake's kill pulled her team within 6-5. The Buccaneers managed just four kills in the fifth set. The Lions had nine, and converted seven of 10 sideouts.Â
Barry hit .150, while Saint Leo hit .185.Â
Didanovic finished with 16 kills and six blocks, including a solo.
Laine Cielena had a season-high 13 kills. Dooley had 11 kills, and Drake 10. Siruckova had 18 kills, and Lemon 14.Â
The Bucs were outblocked 10-8. Saint Leo had nine aces to Barry's six.Â
Jasmine Serna had 27 assists, three aces and 15 digs for the Buccaneers.
Jenny Trinidad added 25 assists, two aces and 14 digs. Jaco finished with 31 digs, and Espinosa had 16.Â
