MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- A night for celebration ended on a bittersweet note as Barry men's soccer falls 2-1 in overtime to Sunshine State Conference opponent Tampa.
Before the game, the program celebrated the accomplishments of the 2015 senior class (Michael Dodds, Patrick Drmola and Bryan Brown) as they played their final home game at Buccaneer Field.
After kickoff, the first half was a back-and-forth struggle as the Buccaneers and Spartans trading great chances on goal with the Bucs outshooting their opponents 9-5.
The stalemate was broken in the 36th minute as Thomas Coombes scored from 19 yards out into the upper right corner to put the Bucs up 1-0 near. The score would remain 1-0 going into halftime.
The second half started off in a similar fashion and stayed so until the 61st minute when Esteban Ochoa accumulated his second yellow card of the game, leading to his dismissal and the Bucs going down to 10 men.
The Bucs would tried to maintain their lead down a man and were able to hold on until the 74th minute, when Spartans forward Nikolai Hammer headed in the equalizer and the game was tied at 1-1.
The two teams would see out the rest of regulation trying to get the lead but after 90 minutes, the scored remained tied and the game went into overtime.
In overtime, the Bucs had a golden chance to win it when a cross into the box met the foot of Sergio Yepes and was just inches from going in but went wide of the net.
The Bucs would come to rue this missed chance as just a few seconds later, the Spartans would win the game on a Monty Barrow chip over the head of Bo Haug.
The Bucs now stand at 6-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the SSC, while Tampa improves to 8-4-0 and 4-1-0 in the conference.
