ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—The second-ranked Barry University women's tennis team repeated as Sunshine State Conference Champions on Saturday morning as the Bucs took a 5-2 win over the top-ranked Lynn University Knights.
The Bucs used their strong doubles play to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles. At the top doubles flight, the second-ranked team of
Barbi Pocza and
Angie Werschel beat No. 4 Eleonora Ianozzi and Ioana Ivan 8-6. At the second flight, the unranked team of
Alex Gwizdowski and
Laura Boguet upset fifth-ranked Magdalena Ekert and Isabell Raich 8-5 to give the Bucs their first point of the day.
In singles action, the Bucs needed three points to take the win. Barry earned those points at the top flight, number four, and number six.
In the top spot, No. 8 Pocza beat No. 7 Ekert for the second time this year. Pocza won 7-5, 6-0. At #4, Matuszak had little issue beating No. 12 Ivan 6-4, 6-2.
Mona Mansour gave Barry the final point needed to take the win. Mansour beat Berkova 7-5, 6-2.
With the win, the Buccaneer women's tennis team claims their fifth Sunshine State Conference championship, and their second in as many years. The win helps the Bucs avenge a regular-season loss to Lynn this year. The Bucs finished the year with an 18-1 record, losing to Lynn on April 4.
The women now wait to find out what their seeding will be for the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament starting May 1. Regional tournament sites will be available on April 25. Stay tuned to the Buccaneer athletic website for all the information.
