Softball Team at Athletic Awards Banquet

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University Athletic Department celebrated its 26th Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 29 at the Signature Grand in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Awards were presented to athletes from every sport.
 
Chris Carlin of the men’s golf team was named 2010 Male Athlete of the Year. Carlin, A junior and three-year letter winner for the Bucs, has been intricate to the success of the Buccaneer golf program since his first season in 2008. This season, Carlin leads the top-ranked Bucs with a 71.68 stroke average per round. In addition to his solid stroke average, he set a new school record with a 0.39 vs Par. Carlin has taken two individual wins this season at the Laker Invitational and the NSU Shark Invitational, in addition to top-ten finishes at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational, Southeastern Collegiate, and Buccaneer Invitational. Carlin and the Bucs continue their season next week when they travel to North Carolina to compete in the South Region Tournament.
 
Senior Mariesa Greene (women’s basketball) was named the 2010 Female Athlete of the Year. Greene led the Bucs to one of their best seasons in school history, posting a 21-10 mark for the year, and making it to SSC Championship game and the South Region Tournament. Greene led the Bucs with 19.1 points per game, 10.6 rebounds per game, and a .593 field goal percentage. Greene ranked in the top 25 in the nation in each of these statistical categories as well, fourth in field goal percentage, 12th in rebounds per game, and 21st in points per game. For her efforts, Greene earned SSC Player of the Year, Daktronics Women’s Basketball South Region Player of the Year, and Daktronics First-team All American.
 
The Professor Neil Miller Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award was given to the male and female student-athletes with the highest cumulative GPA.
 
Daniel Stapff of the men’s golf team became the second men’s golfer in a row to win the award. Stapff, a sophomore, carries a 3.885 in finance. Stapff has helped the men’s golf team this season, playing in 10 tournaments with a 72.96 stroke average per round.
 
Sophomore Allie Llaneras of the women’s soccer team earned the award on the women’s side. Llaneras has a perfect 4.0 as an athletic training major. Llaneras played in 15 games for the Bucs last fall, earning a goal and an assist.
 
The softball team earned the CHAMPS/Lifeskills competition for the third straight year in a row. For the second year in a row the rowing team finished second. The women’s soccer team finished third.
 
Senior Dexter Soloman won the Sister Jeanne O’Laughlin Community Service Award for his charitable work within the school and community. For the past four years, Soloman has served as Barry’s mascot, volunteering at a variety of community events including, Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish, and Miami Heat Charitable Functions. In addition, he has been active with children in local elementary schools. On Barry’s campus, he has volunteered countless hours over the past four years at both athletic and campus events including Founder’s Day, Earth Day, Festival of Nations.
