MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers pulled off a sweep of the Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference softball action at Buccaneer Field on Saturday, winning 5-1 and 1-0 behind sophomore
Brianna Smith who homered to win game one then pitched a complete-game shutout in game two.
In the first game, the Spartans (18-15, 9-9 SSC) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning off Barry starter
Paula Mackin (12-8) when Shannon Kelly scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth inning, Smith came up with two outs and two aboard and jacked a 2-1 pitch from Tampa starter Heather Van Landingham over the wall in right centerfield. The Bucs (31-20, 13-8 SSC) added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning on RBI singles by
Cassy Zamora and
Amanda Goelz.
Mackin went the distance, allowing one run on one hit. She walked three and struck out five. Van Landingham (10-10) took the loss. In 5.2 innings, she allowed five runs on 12 hits, walked two and struck out five.
In the second game, Smith (14-5) worked a complete-game shutout. She scattered five hits and four walks and was helped by seven strikeouts and one double play.
The only run of the game scored in the fourth inning.
Jessica Tabor ripped a two-out double and Goelz laced a single down the right field line to bring pinch runner
Julia Chongarlides with the winning run.
Kari Walsh (8-6) took the loss in the game. She worked six innings, allowing six hits and a run and struck out two.
The Bucs close out SSC play next weekend at conference leader Rollins with a single game on Saturday, Apr. 24 and a doubleheader on Sunday.
