MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a softball doubleheader with the Mercyhurst Lakers on Thursday at Buccaneer Field, losing 6-3 in the opener and taking the nightcap 8-5.
Paula Mackin improved to 6-0 in the nightcap, working into the seventh inning and allowing two runs on six hits. She walked nine and struck out five.
Five different players pounded out two hits, including
Emma Dunlap, who hit the first homer of the season for the Bucs in the second inning, and
Amber Durkin who went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs.
In the opener, the Bucs (11-3) fell behind early and could not catch the Lakers (2-5).
Brianna Smith (5-3) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and seven walks, while striking out five.
The Bucs travel to St. Augustine, Fla., on Wednesday, Mar. 3 to face the Flagler Saints. Live coverage of the games can be heard on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network starting at 3:50 pm.
