LA JOLLA, Cal. – The Barry University baseball team (6-4) split the doubleheader against the University of California San Diego Tritons on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Triton Baseball Field. San Diego (9-3) took the first game 12-4 while Barry won the rubber game 4-2.
In the first game, UCSD came out of the gate strong scoring four runs on three hits in the first inning, capped off by Evan Kehoe's three RBI home run to put the Tritons up 4-0. With the bases loaded in the third, the Tritons added two more runs from a sacrifice fly and bunt by Kehoe and Michael Benton respectively to make it 7-0.
Barry got on the board in the fourth inning after a
Yudelmis Hernandez single drove in
Carlos Gomez from third.
Brett Rossi then brought Hernandez across the plate after his single to left field to cut the lead to 7-2. But in the fifth, the Tritons had three runs on three hits to extend their lead 10-2.
Barry doubled their run total in the eighth when
John Servidio's two-RBI home run blast to right field made it a 10-4 game. The Tritons matched Barry's total as they scored two more runs of their own in the eighth to finish out the game with a 12-4 advantage.
Brian Milanes (1-1) pitched four innings for the Bucs and took the loss while Trevor Decker (2-0) picked up the win for the Tritons. Servidio led Barry with two RBI while seven different Buccaneers contributed hits. For San Diego, two players led with two hits.
In the rubber game, UCSD got on board first with a run in the first inning, but Barry matched them in the second when Gomez scored on a Triton error to tie it up at one. San Diego followed by another run in the third to break the tie, but Barry rebounded in the sixth when Keefe's single scored Servidio from third after he advanced on another Triton error to tie the game 2-2.
After a San Diego pitching change in the sixth with the bases loaded and two men out, an error on the Triton second baseman allowed Gomez to score from third to give Barry their first lead of the game 3-2. With the bases still loaded,
Evan Ashley was walked to bring in another run 4-2.
Gomez paced Barry with three hits and two runs while four other Buccaneers had one hit each. Evan Kehoe led the Tritons with three hits.
Andrew Koubek (1-0) pitched six innings for the Bucs, allowing six hits while striking out five batters.
Aaron Main got his first save of the season after facing three batters in the bottom of the seventh. Derek Barham (1-1) of San Diego suffered the loss.
The Buccaneers conclude their four-game series with the Tritons on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 12:00 pm PST.
