Softball Splits with Tars

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (42-16, 15-8 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference double-header with the Rollins Tars (38-15, 13-10 SSC) to open the final series of the season. Barry won the series opener 1-0 and Rollins took the second game 2-0.

The first game pitted two of the best pitchers in the SSC against each other to open the series. Amber Jack (26-9) was near perfect tossing seven innings of no-hit, shutout ball and struck out two to earn the win. Nicole Anderson (24-12) gave up one unearned run, five hits and struck out five in the loss.

The only score of the game was in the bottom of the third inning when Barry took a 1-0 lead. Shyla Rider scored on a two-out error by Tar shortstop Laurie Starcher to account for the run and the win.

After a no-hit shutout in the first game, Jack earned the starting nod in game two. The first three innings were a replica of the first game, but a two-run home run by Rollins' Jamie Rausch put the Tars on top 2-0 in the fourth inning. Rollins then anchored behind the pitching of Ingrid Schumacher (14-3) who scattered just three hits over seven innings to hold on for the win.

Casey Pyron tossed the final 3.2 innings of three-hit shutout ball to close out game two.

Maile Keeney led the Buccaneers with three hits, which included two of the Bucs three hits in game two, while Ashley Loose added single hits in both games. Batting in the Tar clean-up spot, Rausch was two-for-six with a home run and two RBI.

The series will conclude with single game at 11 am on Sunday, May 6.
