Softball Splits with Eckerd

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (34-11, 8-4 SSC) split a doubleheader with the Eckerd Tritons on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs fell 3-2 in the first game but rebounded for a commanding 10-0 victory in five innings to end the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) series.

After the Tritons (16-30, 2-16 SSC) scored one in the first inning on Julie Kim's RBI single, Buccaneer pitcher Amber Jack blasted a RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. The Bucs then added another in the fourth, as Hailey Lane came in to score on a throwing error by Eckerd's third baseman.

However, the Tritons fought back and plated the game-winning runs in the seventh when Amy McGathey doubled to left center for a 3-2 lead.

Ashley Loose and Jack led Barry with two hits each, while McGathey recorded two for the Tritons.

Jack (19-7) suffered the loss, pitching a complete game and striking out nine while giving up three runs on six hits. Melissa Flint (7-10) picked up the win going all seven innings while allowing eight hits for two runs.

Game two was a one-sided thrashing, as Barry scored seven runs on seven hits in the second while holding Eckerd scoreless. The Bucs began the second with three singles to load the bases, followed by a RBI walk to Ali Perantoni. Brittany Anderson then rapped out a two-run double up the middle before singles by Cristina DeTagle and Maile Keeney extended the lead to 7-0. The Bucs added three more runs in the third to win convincingly 10-0 in five innings.

DeTagle and Keeney both had two hits for the Bucs, as DeTagle and Shyla Rider led with two RBI each. McGathey and Mettina Maggiore recorded one each for Eckerd.

Liz Bennett (14-2) collected the win, tossing a complete two-hit shutout and striking out seven. Mackenzie Dawson (9-16) endured the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.

The Buccaneers are next in action on Saturday-Sunday, Apr. 14-15 in a SSC match-up with the Saint Leo Lions in Saint Leo, Fla.
