Softball Split With Sharks To End Series

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Holli Davis (Jr., Lake Havasu, Ariz.) drove home the game winner in the final game of a Sunshine State Conference series to help the Barry University softball team (41-15, 14-7) split with the Nova Southeastern Sharks (33-30, 10-14 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. NSU took the first game 5-3, but Barry bounced back to win the rubber game 1-0 to take the series.

Nova Southeastern took advantage of two Buccaneer defensive miscues for a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Noemi Luciani, Katie Veltri and Ashley Baker all scored on the Buccaneer errors to account for the runs.

Cristina DeTagle scored on a Shark error in the bottom of the same inning to narrow the gap to 3-1. Davis scored in the bottom of the second on Brittany Anderson's RBI single to pull the Bucs to within one in the second, and Shyla Rider tied the game in the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly.

With the game notched 3-3 heading into the top of the seventh, Nova Southeastern's Kelly Brookins belted a two-run home run to lift the Sharks to a 5-3 win, which evened the series at one game apiece.

Liz Bennett (15-4) gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out 10 in the Barry loss. Ashley Baker (10-5) earned the win for the Sharks allowing 10 hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out six. Rider, DeTagle, and Anderson each recorded two hits to lead Barry at the plate, while Brookins drove in two runs and homered for the Sharks.

In the nightcap, Amber Jack (25-8) tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out seven without allowing a walk to earn the win for the Buccaneers. Dani Caron (12-15) gavie up four hits and one run in the loss for NSU.

After six and a half scoreless innings, Barry scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with only one out. Ashley Loose reached on a walk to lead off the inning. Amanda Goelz followed with a single and Davis ripped an RBI single to left field to win the game for the Bucs.

Goelz led the Bucs at the plate with two hits, while Veltri led the Sharks with two hits.

The Buccaneers will wrap up regular season play with their final SSC series next weekend against the Rollins Tars.
