MIAMI SHORES, Fla. –
Amber Jack (So., Homestead, Fla.) tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out nine to lead the Barry University softball team (40-14, 13-6 SSC) to a 3-0 Sunshine State Conference win over the Nova Southeastern Sharks (32-29, 9-13 SSC) at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.
It is the first 40-win season since 2003 for the Buccaneers when Barry set a school record 52 wins. It is also the seventh time in school history Barry has reached 40-plus wins, each of which the Bucs have advanced to the NCAA South Regional tournament.
Amanda Goelz doubled in a pair of runs in the first inning to give Barry a 2-0 lead.
Shyla Rider led off the inning with a single and
Maile Keeney reached after being hit by a pitch. Goelz's double scored both runs putting Barry on top.
The Buccaneers scored only once more to seal the win in the fifth.
Ashley Loose reached on a one-out single, and Keeney plated the run with an RBI double to left center.
Loose and Goelz both went two-for-three at the plate, while Goelz added two RBI. Keeney also added an RBI, and Loose swiped her 24th stolen base. Noemi Luciani, Valen Eberhard, Katie Veltri, and Kelly Brookins each recorded singles for the Sharks.
Jack (24-8) went seven innings, allowed four hits and struck out nine to record the win for Barry. Adrian Tuttle (11-10) allowed three runs, seven hits and struck out six in the loss for Nova Southeastern.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 28 for the final two-games of the three-game series.
