Softball Falls to Moccasins

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (39-14, 12-6 SSC) fell in both end of a Sunshine State Conference double-header against the 20th-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins (42-13, 15-6 SSC) on Saturday at Buccaneer Field to close out the league series. Florida Southern won the first game 1-0 in 13 innings and later took the nightcap 3-0.
 
In the first game, both teams engaged in a tandem pitching duel. Barry's Liz Bennett earned the start, but only went 1.2 innings before Casey Pyron (1-3) came in and tossed 11.1 innings of relief. She allowed one unearned run on nine hits, walked seven and struck out six in the loss.
 
Heidi Schumacher tossed five innings of four-hit shutout ball and struck out four in the start for the Moccasins. However, Florida Southern ace Megan Brown (26-8) came in and allowed just two hits in the final eight innings and struck out nine to earn the win.
 
The only score of the game came in the top of the 13th inning when Florida Southern's Jackie Leppla hit a two-out RBI single to plate teammate Nikki Henderson for the win, 1-0. Ashley Alpizar and Natalie Lang recorded two hits apiece to lead the Moccasins at the plate, while Barry's Ashley Loose recorded two hits.
 
After the first-game marathon, Barry was held to a mere three hits over seven innings, while the Moccasins recorded three runs on 10 hits. The first Florida Southern score came in the fourth after Leah English was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jessica Jacobs followed with an RBI single to score the go ahead run, 1-0.
 
Sarah Kohlbrenner plated another run in the fifth inning with an RBI single to extend the Moccasin's score by two runs. Angela Williams capped off the win for Florida Southern with an RBI single in the seventh inning, which led to the 3-0 win for the Mocs.
 
Rider recorded two hits for Barry, while Kohlbrenner and Williams added two hits and single RBI each to lead Florida Southern.
 
Schumacher (16-5) earned the start again, but this time tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out four in the win for Florida Southern. Amber Jack (23-8) suffered the Barry loss allowing 10 hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out four.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Apr 27 hosting Nova Southeastern at Buccaneer Field for the first of a three-game series.
