Softball Tops #20 Florida Southern to Open SSC Series

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Senior Ashley Loose (Mill Creek, Wash.) drove in the game-winning run with an RBI double to left center to lead the Barry University softball team (39-12, 12-4 SSC) to a 2-1 Sunshine State Conference win over the 20th-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins in nine innings at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.
 
Florida Southern fired out of the gates early scoring a run in the first inning. With two outs, Sarah Kohlbrenner reached after being hit by a pitch. Jackie Leppla followed with single up the middle to advance Kohlbrenner in scoring position and Natalie Lang followed with an RBI single to plate the run putting the Mocs in the lead 1-0 after a half inning.
 
After four scoreless innings, the Buccaneers finally managed to tie the game. Cristina DeTagle led off the fifth inning with a bunt single and Ashley Loose followed with a sacrifice to advance the runner. With two outs, Amanda Goelz lined an RBI single to left field to plate the tying run.
 
With the score deadlocked 1-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, a lead off walk and two consecutive hits sealed the win for Barry. Shyla Rider reached on the free pass followed by a DeTagle single. With runners at first and second, Loose belted the game-winning RBI double to left center that scored Rider, ending the game.
 
DeTagle was 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Buccaneers, while Loose added two hits and the game-winning RBI. Ashley Alpizar and Jesse Shepherd each had two hits for the Moccasins, while Natalie Lang accounted for Florida Southern's only RBI.
 
Amber Jack (23-7) scattered nine hits over nine innings and allowed one run, two walks and struck out six to earn the Buccaneer win. Florida Southern ace Megan Brown (25-8) tossed eight innings, allowed 10 hits, two runs, three walks and struck out four in the loss.
 
The three-game SSC series will conclude on Saturday, Apr. 21 with a 1 pm double-header at Buccaneer Field.
