Softball Splits With #7 Florida Gulf Coast

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Amber Jack (So., Homestead, Fla.) recorded the win from the mound and drove in the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th to lead the 22nd-ranked Barry University softball team (38-12) to a double-header split with the seventh-ranked Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Tuesday night at Buccaneer Field.
 
Jack (22-7) tossed a complete 10-inning five-hit shutout and recorded seven strikeouts en route to a 1-0 win over the highly touted Eagles. The only walk she allowed was intentional in the ninth.
 
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the 10th inning, Barry finally managed to plate the winning run. Amanda Goelz sacrificed tiebreaker runner Danielle Renzendes to third base. Holli Davis later walked and stole second, which was followed by Jack's game winning RBI single with one out. The hit handed Eagle pitcher Rachael Edinger (25-1) her first loss of the season after 9.1 innings, giving up 11 hits and striking out three.
 
Jack and Brittany Anderson led the Buccaneers at the plate with three hits apiece. Rachel Homan and Jessica Rouse each had two hits for FGCU.
 
In the nightcap, Barry was held to three hits offensively while Florida Gulf Coast erupted for nine runs in the first three innings for a 9-0 win after five. Homan homered twice in the game and Carmen Paez hit a grand slam which accounted for eight of the Eagle's nine runs.
 
Liz Bennett (15-3) suffered the loss giving up six runs (one earned), three hits, walked three and struck out two. Jack tossed 1.1 innings of relief allowing three runs on three this and Casey Pyron closed the game down with two innings of shutout relief and three strikeouts. Dana Frantz (24-3) gave up three hits and struck out three to earn the win for FGCU.
 
Homan and Paez led with four RBI apiece, while Homan added two hits.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action hosted Florida Southern College at Buccaneer Field for a three-game SSC series beginning Friday, Apr. 20 at 7 pm.
