Softball Walks Out of Lions Den With a Series Sweep

ST. LEO, Fla. – Shyla Rider (So., Woodbridge, Va.) drove in the game-winner in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the 22nd-ranked Barry University softball team (37-11, 11-4 SSC) to a 3-2 Sunshine State Conference win over the Saint Leo Lions (27-20, 9-9 SSC) to complete the series sweep on Sunday at University Field.
 
Barry took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning after scoring twice. Cristina DeTagle led the inning off with a single and Ashley Loose reached on an error by Saint Leo third baseman Monique Dominguez. Amanda Goelz followed up with a sacrifice fly to center field and Holli Davis hit an RBI double to drive in the Bucs' runs.
 
Just when it looked like the Bucs had the game wrapped up, Saint Leo scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 2-2. April Slate reached on a one-out single and scored on Ali Flynn's RBI double. Erin Brunt then followed with an RBI single to plate the tying run.
 
The next three innings were scoreless, but the Buccaneers erupted with four hits and a run in the 11th to break the tie. Ali Perantoni, Brittany Anderson, Rider, and DeTagle recorded one-out singles. However, it was Rider's RBI single that drove in the Bucs' winning run.
 
DeTagle went four-for-six and scored once to lead the Buccaneers offensively, while Goelz and Anderson added two hits. Rider, Goelz and Davis each recorded single RBI for Barry. Brunt, Maddox, and Slate led the Lions with two hits apiece.
 
Liz Bennett received the starting nod and tossed 6.2 innings giving up two runs, eight hits, and struck out four. Amber Jack (21-7) entered the game in the seventh and hurled 4.1 innings of two-hit shutout relief and struck out four to earn the win. Ashley Urbanik (18-11) gave up three runs (two earned) on 11 Buccaneer hits and struck out six in the Saint Leo loss.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 17 hosting the seventh-ranked Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Buccaneer Field at 5 pm.
