ST. LEO, Fla. – Maile Keeney (Sr., Longwood, Fla.) capped off the Sunshine State Conference series-opening double-header breaking Barry's career home run and RBI records to lead the Buccaneer softball team (36-11, 10-4 SSC) to a pair of wins over the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday at University Field. Barry won the first game 1-0 in 10 innings and followed up with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

 

Liz Bennett (15-2) and Saint Leo's Ashley Urbanik (18-10) battled it out from the pitching circle without either allowing a run until the 10^th inning to start the series. Bennett struck out 11 in route to the seven-hit shutout win, while Urbanik allowed one run on nine hits and struck out seven in the loss.

 

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, Saint Leo (27-18, 9-8 SSC) nearly caught the unsuspecting Bucs with their hands in their pockets. Hayley Mallory hit a two-out single to left field with Shelly Bartlett on second, which nearly ended the game. However, Barry's Ashley Loose scooped up the loose ball on the run and threw out Bartlett at home to end the inning.

 

Finally in the 10^th, Loose came through again for the Bucs and led the inning off with a single. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then to third on Danielle Rezendes' sacrifice bunt. Amanda Goelz then hit into a sacrifice fly that plated the winning run, 1-0.

 

Shlya Rider finished three-for-five to lead Barry at the plate in the series opener, while Keeney and Brittany Anderson each added two hits. Mallory and Urbanik each had two hits apiece to lead Saint Leo.

 

In the nightcap, Loose hit a two-out RBI double to plate Cristina DeTagle for the go ahead run in the fifth inning to give Barry a 1-0 lead. Goelz followed with a leadoff homer in the sixth, her fifth of the season, to extend Barry's lead, 2-0.

 

The Buccaneers added three more runs in the seventh when Keeney belted a three-run home run, which was her fifth this season. With that swing of the bat, she broke two Barry career records recording her 24^th career long ball and 146^th RBI. She is also the career leader in doubles, extra base hits and sacrifice flies.

 

Ashley Maddox narrowed the Buccaneer lead in the bottom of the inning with a one-out solo home run, but the Buccaneer defense fending off the charging Lions for a 5-1 victory.

 

DeTagle went three-for-three at the plate and scored twice, while Goelz finished three-for-four with an RBI. Keeney recorded one home run and three RBI. Maddox, Urbanik and Heather Stroud each had single hits for Saint Leo.

 

Amber Jack (20-7) reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in her career. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out three. Saint Leo's Kiki Von Holt allowed three runs on 11 hits and struck out one in the loss.

The series will conclude on Sunday with a 1 pm single game at University Field.
