MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (32-10, 6-3 SSC) completed a three-game Sunshine State Conference sweep over the Florida Tech Panthers (34-20, 10-5 SSC) on Sunday afternoon at Bottge Field. Barry won the first game 1-0 and the nightcap 3-2.
Barry took a one run lead in the first inning and held on to defeat the Panthers by the same score in the first of two games on Sunday.
Shyla Rider and
Cristina DeTagle led off the first inning with back-to-back singles.
Amanda Goelz then plated Rider on a sacrifice fly for Barry's 1-0 lead. That was all the Buccaneers needed to take a two-game advantage in the SSC series.
Liz Bennett (12-2) went the distance to earn the win, while striking out nine batters on her way to the four-hit shutout. Judith Husband (15-6) suffered the Florida Tech loss allowing one run on five hits and three strikeouts.
DeTagle led all batters in the double-header opener with two hits, while Goelz drove in the game's only run.
In the nightcap, Barry scored twice in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. Goelz led the inning off with a double and scored on
Holli Davis' follow-up RBI triple to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
Amber Jack then plated Davis with a sacrifice fly to center to extend the lead, 2-0. Goelz's double tied Barry's single-season record 18 set by
Shyla Rider last season.
The Panthers responded in the bottom of the same inning to tie the game, 2-2. Kristin Fettes started the Panther scoring rally with a two-out single, reaching third on a Buccaneer defensive miscue. Ashley Lugo and Ida Danielson followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the game.
In the seventh, Barry finally regained the lead, 3-2, when DeTagle scored on an error by the Panther shortstop.
Liz Bennett entered the game in the bottom of the inning shutting down the Panther offense to earn the save, her first of the season.
Rider went 3-for-4 to lead the Bucs at the plate, while Goelz added two hits. Both Davis and Jack added single RBI.
Jack (19-6) also picked up the win from the circle after allowing two runs on four hits and struck out one. Ida Danielson (1-4) suffered the loss in relief going the final four innings. Starter Amber West opened with three innings, gave up six hits and two runs.
The Buccaneers will return to the friendly confines of Buccaneer Field on Friday, Apr. 6 & 7 for another SSC series, this time with the Eckerd Tritons.
