Softball Takes Two on Day One of Tournament

BRADENTON, Fla.—The Barry University softball team opened up the 2007 College Softball Fun in the Sun Tournament with a pair of wins on Friday at the GT Bray Complex. The Bucs (15-8) crushed the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots 15-4 in six innings on 20 hits and then edged the 25th-ranked Carson Newman Eagles 2-1.

The Fighting Scots (1-6) broke open the scoreless game in the first with three hits to take an early 4-0 lead. Jaci Miller recorded an RBI single to score the first run of the game. Lena Messina then scored on a double steal before Jodie Waskey went long for a two-run home run. However, those were the only runs Ohio Valley would end up getting.

Barry erupted in the second and third innings for a combined 13 hits to score 11 runs as the Bucs batted through the cycle twice. Ali Perantoni led off the second with a single followed by singles from Brittany Anderson, Shyla Rider and Cristina DeTagle. Ashley Loose then blasted a grand slam to give the Bucs a 5-4 lead.

After a double and single by Perantoni and Anderson respectively, Sara Hipson recorded an RBI single early in the third inning. Rider and DeTagle brought in two more runs before Loose hit a sacrifice fly to plate Rider. Holi Davis and Danielle Rezendes finished the inning for the Bucs as they each recorded RBI singles.

The Buccaneers continued to pound the Fighting Scots with four more runs in the sixth. With two outs, Hipson, Rider, DeTagle, and Loose each singled to put the Bucs on top 15-4.

Amber Jack (8-5) picked up the win, going three innings of relief work, striking out six and not giving up a hit. Taylor Kimmel took the loss for Ohio Valley, going all six innings and giving up 15 runs on 20 hits.

In the second game of the day, the Eagles (17-2) scored first before the Bucs charged back for the victory. Jessie Howard led off the game with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Amber Palmer for their lone run of the game.

The Bucs went five scoreless innings before getting two runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a lead off walk to Hipson, Rider and DeTagle both singled to load the bases for Amanda Goelz. Goelz then had a two-RBI single up the middle for the game winning runs.

Amber Jack (9-5) pitched a complete game for the Bucs, giving up five hits for one run while striking out five. Jessie Armstrong (6-2) received the loss for the Eagles, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five.

Barry continues the Fun in the Sun Tournament on Saturday, Mar. 10 with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm against Grand Valley State and at 7:00 pm versus North Georgia.
