BRADENTON, Fla. – On day two of the 2007 College Softball Fun in the Sun Tournament, the Barry University softball team shutout the Grand Valley State Lakers 9-0 on 18 hits and again shutout the North Georgia Saints 1-0 in a nail bitter.

 

The Bucs (17-8) started the first inning with three straight singles as Shyla Rider, Cristina DeTagle and Ashley Loose each reached to load the bases. Holli Davis then plated in the first run of the game to give Barry an early 1-0 lead.

 

Barry next scored one more in the third and added two in the fourth. After a lead off single by DeTagle, Amanda Goelz hit a sacrifice fly to right field which scored DeTagle. Ali Perantoni led off the fourth with a double followed by a single from Brittany Anderson. Pinch hitter Maile Keeney then brought in Perantoni while Loose singled to score the subsequent run.

 

After recording one run in the sixth, the Bucs opened the game wide open with four runs in the seventh. Anderson singled to start the inning while Rider doubled and DeTagle singled to load the bases. Loose then hit a two-RBI double to centerfield while Goelz and Davis followed with RBI's to give Barry its 9-0 lead.

 

Anderson, DeTagle, and Loose paced the Bucs with three hits each while seven other players recorded at least one hit. Stephanie Schrader, Becky Plummer, and Lisa Preuss each led the Lakers (8-4) with one hit.

 

Liz Bennett (6-1) pitched a shutout and a complete game for the Buccaneers, striking out six while only giving up three hits. Lauren Rohan (1-1) took the loss for the Lakers, going 3.1 innings and giving up 10 hits.

 

In the first inning of the night game against the Saints (15-6), the Bucs plated the solitary run of the game on Goelz's single to centerfield which scored DeTagle after her single.

 

DeTagle led Barry with four hits while Sara Hipson recorded a career-high three. Three other players also had one.

 

Amber Jack (10-5) pitched a stellar contest, throwing a shutout and complete game. Against a team that had scored 25 runs on 32 hits the previous two games, Jack held the Saints to three hits while striking out seven. Andrea Moss (10-2) suffered the loss, tossing a complete game but giving up nine hits.

 

The Bucs conclude the Fun in the Sun Tournament with two games beginning at 9:00 am versus West Liberty and at 11:00 am taking on American International.
